Studio Notes Podcast - Dave Clarke

The Baron of Techno

I started this podcast for one reason: curiosity. I wanted a place where I could have long, unforced conversations with people whose thinking and work interest me. Not interviews, not press rounds, not questions with an agenda, but two people at a table exploring whatever comes up.

The first conversation is with someone I have admired for a long time: Dave Clarke. Often called the “Baron of Techno”, Dave has shaped electronic music culture since the 1990s. He built a career with an uncompromising sound, a sharp intellect, and a deep sense of craft. What few people realise is that he is also a serious photographer with a love for black and white, shaped by the same discipline and restlessness as his music.

In the episode we talk about:

  • How music and photography influence one another in his life

  • Growing up in a house full of analog gear and records before the internet existed

  • The importance of album art and why visuals shaped his taste as much as sound

  • His love for black and white and the mental calm it creates

  • Technology, AI, and what changes and what does not in creative work

The language of each episode depends on the guest. This one is in English. Every episode will also come with a written summary in both English and Dutch so the ideas remain accessible regardless of language.

This is the beginning of Studio Notes. More conversations will follow, without schedule, only when they need to happen.
