Behind the Scenes

After the Chanel campaign I shot two years ago, I was recently invited by Dior to photograph a new series for Dior Magazine. This time, the focus was on the My Dior and La D de Dior high jewellery collections. It is always an honour to be approached by one of the great fashion houses, especially to capture something as iconic and delicate as their jewelry.

As an artist, my work has always started from a different place than most photographers. I never took the traditional route of commercial work first and fine art later. For me it was the other way around. I built my career through galleries, exhibitions, and self-initiated projects, and I am fortunate to be able to live from my art.

That independence allows me to approach commissioned work with genuine creative energy. I truly enjoy working on assignments, especially when they challenge me to translate my visual language into new contexts. I find it exciting to collaborate with clients who value strong concepts and trust in the creative process. These projects push my boundaries in the best way, and I welcome that.

That was exactly the case with this one.

Working with Dior means stepping into a much larger production. In my personal projects I often work in small teams. Sometimes just a model, my creative partner Janneke Schrey, and myself. On a project like this, there can easily be over forty people on set. Stylists, hair and make-up artists, producers, creatives from the agency, assistants, clients, and more. It is a different rhythm, but one I enjoy stepping into.

The shoot took place in Paris, one of my favourite cities to work in. The energy is intense, creative, and focused. Leading up to the shoot, we had several creative meetings with Dior. I cannot share too much about the concept, but I was given the space to approach the images with my own visual language. That freedom makes all the difference.

Even in this type of high-pressure environment, I aim to bring the same sense of craft, precision, and emotion that I bring to my personal work. I believe we achieved exactly that.
